Hello

I’m Sheryl Brown, and I'm honored to serve as a Board Director for the Wings to Freedom Foundation, bringing more than five decades of service, leadership, and advocacy to a mission that is deeply personal to me. My life’s work has been grounded in supporting families, uplifting youth, and standing with individuals who are navigating the justice system or overcoming trauma.

My leadership journey began through Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., where I’ve proudly served for over 50 years. From my undergraduate days at Florida Memorial University to regional leadership roles across the state of Florida, I have been committed to building stronger, safer, and more empowered communities.

Professionally, my career has spanned public service, youth development, and domestic violence intervention — and each chapter has strengthened my belief that every person deserves safety, dignity, and a chance to rebuild. Being part of Wings to Freedom allows me to continue that purpose with compassion and intention.

My Story

My journey in service began in 1975 when I earned my Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Florida Memorial University. Soon after, I stepped into leadership within Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., advising the Iota Alpha Chapter for five years and helping young women develop confidence, character, and purpose. Those early years laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to mentorship and community empowerment.

I dedicated 18 years to public service as the Administrator of Child Support Enforcement in Miami-Dade County, advocating for families and ensuring children received the support they deserved. My passion for leadership education led me to pursue a Master of Science in Management with a concentration in Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, which I completed in 2008. During my graduate studies, my paper, A Leader’s Decision to Privatize Business, was recognized and published by my professor, Dr. Bahaudin Mujtaba.

My heart has always been with young people, especially young Black males facing systemic and societal challenges. This passion led me to organize the Area Six Youth Male Symposium under Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., an initiative designed to connect youth with positive role models and life-changing guidance.

For ten years, I served as the Juvenile Services Coordinator for Broward County’s 17th Judicial Circuit Court. There, I worked closely with at-risk youth and families navigating the justice system — advocating for support, intervention, and stability during some of their most vulnerable moments.

After retiring from the State of Florida in 2015, I continued my commitment to survivors through Women In Distress as an InVEST Advocate. In partnership with a Broward Sheriff’s Office detective, I reviewed domestic-violence police reports and reached out directly to individuals at the highest risk for homicide. This work deepened my understanding of the complexities survivors face and strengthened my dedication to proactive, life-saving intervention.

Today, I serve as a Care Coordinator with Smith Community Mental Health, supporting families impacted by domestic violence through court-mandated services, particularly cases involving juvenile perpetrators. My role allows me to walk alongside families during some of their most difficult seasons, providing guidance, compassion, and pathways toward healing.

My lifelong dedication to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. remains one of my greatest honors. As a Life Member and Crystal Dove, I proudly celebrate over 50 years of sisterhood, leadership, and service.

Joining the Wings to Freedom Foundation allows me to continue this legacy — standing with survivors, advocating for safety and justice, and helping families reclaim hope and freedom.
